Allergy-Proof Your Home: 7 Practical Cleaning Tips for Hay Fever Season

by Antoaneta Tsochevaon 3 June 2025in Cleaning Tips

Spring in London is a relief for the soul but misery for the sinuses. Bright mornings, blossoms in every park, windows cracked open at last. Yet if you live with hay fever, the same breeze that brings birdsong also brings pollen right into your living room.

Itchy eyes, a nose that won’t stop running, half-slept nights. While you can’t tell the trees to stop blooming, you can do more than you think to keep pollen from making itself at home. A few smart tweaks to your usual cleaning routine can turn your flat into the safe haven you wish the garden could be.

These are not chores that take all day.

Simple Habits That Ease The Worst Days of Spring

Easy Cleaning Tips

  1. Leave your shoes at the door

Most pollen sneaks in on you. Your shoes, your coat, even your bag collect it as you move through parks or streets.

A no-shoes rule helps. Keep a simple rack by the door or a box to toss trainers in as you come inside. Hang coats and bags by the door too, not over the sofa or bed.

If you want to go further, swipe coats and bags with a lint roller after a long day out. It feels fiddly, but you’ll be amazed how much dust and pollen it pulls off.

  1. Vacuum like you mean it

Your hoover does more than lift dirt. It pulls out pollen, dust mites and all the tiny bits your eyes miss.

If you get hay fever badly, invest once in a vacuum with a HEPA filter. It traps particles that most ordinary models blow straight back into the air.

Vacuum high-use spots twice a week in spring. Go over sofas and fabric chairs, too. Take your time: slow passes work better than frantic back and forth.

  1. Dust properly, not just quickly

A dry cloth flicks dust into the air and right up your nose. A damp microfibre cloth catches it and holds it.

Start high and work down. Light fittings, door frames and the tops of cupboards gather dust quietly all year. Don’t ignore blinds, window sills and skirting boards either. These are pollen magnets when windows are open.

  1. Wash what can be washed

Soft furnishings collect pollen like a sponge. Curtains, blankets and cushions hold onto it for weeks.

Wash them more than usual when pollen counts spike. If the label allows, a hot wash helps. What you can’t wash, give a good shake outside or run over with the hoover’s upholstery tool.

Change bed sheets weekly, too. You’ll breathe easier at night.

  1. Pick the right time for fresh air

Open windows at the wrong time and you invite a hay fever attack. Pollen levels are highest in the middle of the day and early evening.

Open windows early in the morning or later at night if you can. Even then, crack them just enough to freshen up without letting a field’s worth of pollen in.

If you have an air purifier, switch it on while the windows are open to help catch stray bits.

  1. Keep damp at bay

Mould loves damp corners, and its spores can make your hay fever feel worse.

Always use the extractor fan when cooking or showering. Wipe condensation off windows each morning. If certain rooms stay damp, a small dehumidifier can help without drying the air too much.

If mould does appear, deal with it quickly. Natural mould sprays work well for small spots. If you find a big patch, call in the pros.

  1. Air purifiers help, but choose wisely

A good purifier won’t do the cleaning for you but it can catch pollen that slips through.

Look for one with a true HEPA filter, not just a fancy box claiming to clean the air. Put it in the room where you spend most of your time, often the bedroom. Keep doors and windows closed while it runs.

Used alongside these habits, it’s an extra layer of defence.

A quick word about pets

7 Easy Cleaning Tips

Your dog or cat doesn’t mean to help pollen get indoors, but their fur carries it in. Give them a gentle wipe down with a damp cloth after walks or garden adventures. Brush them outdoors and wash their bedding regularly. It’s a small effort for fewer sneezes.

Putting it all together

Allergy-proofing your flat isn’t about making it spotless or sterile. It’s about choosing small habits that cut pollen before it settles where you rest and sleep.

You can’t stop spring from blooming outside your window. But you can make sure that inside, you breathe a little easier and wake up feeling more like yourself.

FAQs

Should I keep windows shut all spring?
Not completely. Open them early or late when pollen is lower, and keep openings small.

Is paying for professional cleaners worth it?
It can be. Some cleaning companies offer hypoallergenic or eco-friendly options if you’re short on time.

Can houseplants make allergies worse?
A few flowering ones might, but many help clean the air. Peace lilies and spider plants are good choices if you’re sensitive.
