Lemon and baking soda are the only ingredients that modern, eco-friendly domestic cleaners need, it has been suggested.

While lemons are already renowned for their perfume quality, they can also be used for cleaning, reports Kristv.com.

Either on their own or in combination with baking soda or vinegar, lemon can be used to great effect for cleaning kitchen or bathroom surfaces.

Meanwhile, baking soda is an excellent way to remove water-based stains, or even to deodorise a refrigerator or rubbish bin.

Baking soda and lemon are also environmentally friendly.

Moreover, because these products can be found around the house, domestic cleaners could also save money.

Robin Russell of cleaning manufacturer Rainbow told the Ottawa Citizen that consumers were less concerned about the cost of eco-friendly cleaning products than how effective they were.

He said: "They want something that is going to work."
