A new environmentally friendly clothes cleaning product has been created to get rid of residue, mould and fungus, it has been revealed.

Primarily designed as a washing machine cleaner, the new Smelly Washer product can also be used by carpet cleaners and upholstery cleaners to get rid of nasty whiffs.

The Smelly Washer inventor Paul Flynn, a former washing machine repairman, was inspired by an organic composition he'd used in the navy to clean clothes.

His product has been so popular that Mr Flynn didn't initially need to advertise.

He said: "At first I didn’t even advertise because the cleaner sold itself either by word of mouth or by news reporters and bloggers spreading the word."

Just one spoonful of the Smelly Washer product in a wash is allegedly enough to remove the build up of spores left behind by fabric cleaning products as well as mould and mildew smell.

Meanwhile, according to a study by the Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology (Creal), exposure to domestic cleaning products can account for as much as 15 per cent of asthma cases.
