Manchester in street cleaning abstinence - 25/04/2008

Cleaning contractors could have their work cut out in Manchester today (April 25th) as the city undergoes a 24-hour street cleaning abstinence.

Manchester City Council bosses have decided to halt all street cleaning for a day in a bid to get people to think about the amount of litter they throw away, reports the Manchester Evening News.

But house bins could become inundated with trash-deposits as residents make efforts to clean up their act.

Manchester Evening News is even displaying a message on its newspaper to remind readers to dispose of rubbish responsibly.

According to councillor Eddy Newman, the initiative is "a brilliant way of encouraging the public to realise the importance of keeping the streets clean".

But the new influx of household rubbish could result in many homeowners taking matters in to their own hands and enlisting the help of domestic cleaners to sort out the day's mess.
