Getting a cleaning agency to spruce up your home can help you sell it, one celebrity property expert has claimed.

According to the presenter of Channel 4's Property Ladder, Sarah Beeny, getting rid of bad odours and stains from the most innocuous nooks and crannies is half the battle when it comes to selling a home.

In an article for the Sunday Mirror newspaper, the presenter included domestic cleaning such as upholstery cleaners and carpet cleaners, on a six-point list of tips to selling a house during the credit crunch.

But the Beeny Lady, as she is affectionately known by fans, insists that the owners must clean "thoroughly throughout".

Recent research carried out by GMTV found that 13 per cent of people never consider cleaning their own oven, although 84 per cent claim they get a cleaning company or friend to remove their cooking grime.

Ms Beeny added: "Smells of dogs, cigarettes and babies, and general grime will not get you a sale."
