Silver is a soft, malleable metal that is crafted into many objects such as flatware, candlesticks, vases, and tea and coffee services. Whether your silver is coin silver, Sheffield plate, electroplate (also known as silver plate), nickel silver, or sterling silver, over time and with use, all silver develops a rich patina or sheen.
Often the patina becomes discolored or tarnished when exposed to sulfur compounds in the air, or from contact with certain foods. If the tarnish is not removed, the discoloration will become dark gray to black in color and completely cover the original silver color.

The best way to prevent silver from tarnishing is to use it every day and to avoid prolonged contact with foods containing sulfur or other acids that will corrode silver. Examples of these foods include eggs, onions, vinegar, broccoli, olives, fruit, tomatoes, and salt.

How to Wash Silver

Because it is a soft metal, silver is prone to scratch marks. Wash pieces individually and never use abrasive cleaners, stainless steel, or a toothbrush to clean silver.

Silver should be washed by hand with mild liquid detergent and warm water and then dried thoroughly to prevent water spots. Silver should never remain wet or even damp, as this will hasten the tarnishing process. Modern silverware can be washed in the dishwasher, but avoid using it for antique silver.

How to Polish Silver
Even if you use your silver every day, it should be cleaned and polished several times a year with a cream paste specifically made for silver. Apply with the paste with a sponge and wipe to remove tarnish. Rinse out the sponge to remove the black tarnish and repeat until it is gone from the silver. For small or hard to reach areas use a cotton swab or clean cotton cloth wrapped around a fingertip. Wash with mild liquid soap and water and then rinse and dry the silver. Use a clean soft cloth to buff the silver to a shine. When finished, wear cotton gloves when handling to avoid causing tarnish fingerprints.

If there is a significant amount of tarnish, try the following method to remove it. Do not use this technique on a regular basis, as it requires soaking silver in water, which may affect the patina.

Place a piece of aluminum foil in a sink filled with warm water. Add 1/4 to 1/2 cup of baking soda to the water, then place the silver in the sink and let it soak for 10 to 15 minutes. Remove the silver and wash thoroughly with mild liquid detergent and warm water. Dry with a soft cotton cloth. If the tarnish is not completely gone, use the cream paste to remove the rest and repeat washing and drying. Buff with a clean cotton cloth.

Unless a piece of silver is ornately designed and difficult to clean using other methods, avoid using a silver dip to remove tarnish. A dip often removes the patina and will cause long-term damage to silver if used on a regular basis. If you decide to use a dip, do not let the silver soak in it. Always finish by polishing silver with a cream paste, washing and drying thoroughly, and then buffing it to a shine with a soft clean cotton cloth.

How to Store Silver
When not in use, store your silver in a small cabinet or chest that is clean and dry. Storing it in a closed environment minimizes the amount of air it comes into contact with, delaying the tarnishing process. Many chests have individual compartments for each piece (for example, those designed for silverware) and scratching can be avoided. If not, then roll the individual pieces in a cotton flannel cloth with an anti-tarnish finish.
Do not store silver wrapped in plastic or newspaper, which might react chemically with silver to damage it. Silver pieces should be wrapped in tarnish proof cotton flannel cloth and stored in plastic container, not a cardboard box. Anti-tarnish cloth is sold at fabric stores and can be purchased by the yard.
